Mia - Basket Muzzle for Small, Short-Snouted Dogs

Small dogs with compressed muzzles and broad cheeks are consistently underserved by standard basket sizing. Run a conventional small muzzle on a wide-faced dog and you get one of two failure modes: a basket long enough to clear the nose but loose across the cheeks, or a snug fit that crowds the mouth and restricts panting. Mia is built to solve that specific geometry.

The basket is proportioned short and wide, giving dogs with flat or semi-flat faces genuine clearance to pant, drink and take food while the muzzle stays seated. Every unit is made to order in your selected coloDesign features

• Short-snout, wide-cheek geometry. Basket depth and width are set for dogs with shorter noses and broader facial structure, rather than scaled down from a longer-muzzled pattern.
• Genuine panting clearance. Sufficient internal depth for open-mouth panting, drinking and treat delivery when correctly fitted — the baseline requirement for any muzzle worn for more than a few minutes.
• Flat head-strap fastening. The over-head strap sits flat and low in the visual field, minimizing obstruction for dogs that rely on peripheral awareness.
• Low mass. Basket alone: 33 g (approx. 1.2 oz). Complete standard build with rivets and buckle: 71 g (approx. 2.5 oz).
• Adjustable BioThane neck strap with buckle closure for a stable, escape-resistant fit. Optional strap upgrades available for dogs that need a different fit profile.
• Riveted strap attachment. Straps are permanently riveted for load strength and cannot be removed without cutting.
• Made to order in your color selection — practical equipment that doesn't have to look clinical.

Who Mia fits

Mia suits small dogs with short snouts and comparatively wide heads, including flatter-faced small crossbreeds carrying extra width through the cheeks, and dogs that need a secure fit without excess basket length.

Do not size by breed. Head shape varies widely within any breed, and breed-based guessing is the single most common cause of a returned or unusable muzzle. Measure first.

Hardware note

Muzzles ordered in black strapping with nickel hardware ship with Chicago screws as standard.

Noseband options

The starred (*) noseband differs from the standard noseband in width only: the * option uses 16 mm BioThane, which adds a small amount of effective length once paired with the basket. The basket itself is identical either way.

Foam-padded nosebands are attached with Chicago screws, and ship with two shorter screws so the foam can be removed later if preferred.

Why small dogs need properly designed muzzles

Small dogs are routinely dismissed — labeled yappy, written off as having "small dog syndrome," treated as less serious animals than their larger counterparts. In practice they face a harder environment: more unsolicited handling from strangers who reach for them without asking, and a world scaled several sizes too large. Vocalization is frequently their primary means of signaling that they are not coping.

The working case for a muzzle is the same regardless of size. It supports handler and public safety, prevents scavenging, makes veterinary and grooming handling safer, and buys time for behavior work to progress at the dog's own pace. Several jurisdictions also require muzzling for dogs of any size on public transport or in designated areas. Mia exists because that need doesn't scale down.

Not sure Mia is the right size?

Correct sizing is what delivers safe panting space, a secure seat on the face, and no rubbing at the cheeks or bridge. If a dog measures between sizes, measure again rather than estimating from breed.
